When Can You Claim a Deduction for Compulsory Work Uniform?

You can claim a tax deduction for a compulsory work uniform where certain conditions are met.

A compulsory work uniform is a set of clothing or a single item that identifies you as an employee of an organisation. To be an allowable deduction, your employer must have a strictly enforced policy that makes it compulsory for you to wear the uniform while at work.

Your employer's compulsory work uniform policy guidelines should stipulate the characteristics of the colour, style and type of clothing and accessories that qualify them as being a distinctive part of the compulsory work uniform. To be a compulsory work uniform, the clothing must be unique, distinctive, peculiar to your organisation and not available to the public.

What is included in a compulsory work uniform?

A uniform is a collection of interrelated items of clothing and accessories that is distinctive to your organisation. The uniform should generally be worn together (that is, the collection of items worn at the same time) rather than as individual pieces.

Shoes, socks and stockings may be included in a compulsory work uniform but only where they are specified (colour, style) in your employer’s compulsory uniform policy.

Single items of compulsory clothing

For a single item of clothing to be classed as a compulsory work uniform, it must be:

  • distinctive or unique to your employer,
  • not available to be worn by the general public, and
  • compulsory to wear at work.

Example of Compulsory Work Uniform

You can claim a single item of clothing, such as a jumper or shirt with an employer's logo permanently attached, where it is compulsory for you to wear it at work and it is not available to be worn by the general public.
Shoes, socks and stockings

For shoes, socks and stockings to be classed as a compulsory work uniform, they must:
  • be an essential part of a distinctive compulsory uniform - the wearing of which is enforced by your employer, and
  • have the characteristics such as colour, style and type specified in your employer's uniform policy.
